ISLAMIST TAKEOVER COMPLETE IN EGYPT:
In a sweeping move Sunday, newly elected President Mohamed Morsi sacked the entire leadership of Egypt's defense establishment. His dismissals included Field Marshal Mohammed Hussein Tantawi - the defense minister and top military chief - and his deputy, army chief of staff Sami Anan. Morsi also cancelled all constitutional changes that gave the military enlarged powers. Sunday's actions now put Egypt's Islamist president in control of the military as well as the presidency and the parliament The Muslim Brotherhood's Morsi has wasted no time in grasping full domination of the Arab world's largest country at the expense of the military, which many hoped would be a moderating influence over him. A leading Middle East analyst said "Morsi's move places the Muslim Brotherhood solidly at the helm of power in Egypt." The damage caused to Egypt's pro-West and secular military has disturbing ramifications for the peace treaty with Israel. (Arutz-7/YNet)
MORSI SET TO ENDANGER ISRAEL'S PEACE TREATY WITH EGYPT: Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi is scheduled to discuss making changes to the Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt, it was disclosed on Tuesday. Egypt now wants full sovereignty over the Sinai. According to the Camp David Accords, which were signed in the late 1970s, the Sinai region is to be demilitarized. Israel last week allowed Egypt to temporarily station tanks in the demilitarized zone in order to stop increasing terrorist attacks. Israel's Menachem Begin relinquished the Sinai to Egypt's Anwar Sadat in exchange for the promise of cessation of belligerency and normalized relations between the two nations. With the Muslim Brotherhood, father of all terrorist organizations and hater of Israel, now fully in control in Egypt, somewhat normalized, relations with the Jewish state are severely threatened. US WILL JOIN ISRAEL'S WAR AGAINST IRAN: Israel has received assurances from the Obama Administration, as well as from Republican nominee, Mitt Romney, that the US will join a war against Iran on Israel's side, if such a war breaks out. According to the report, Israel believes the US military will supply "a protective umbrella" in case of a missile attack on the Jewish state by Iran and its proxies Hamas and Hezbollah. The assessments delivered from the US to Israel are that President Obama will not be able to ignore an Israeli strike on Iran, and certainly not a harsh Iranian response against Israel. If he does so, chances are he will lose the elections. On the other hand, joining the battle will increase Obama's chances of reelection, because US voters will not replace a president in a time of war. (INN) "It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man." Ps 118:8
ISRAEL'S CLOCK ON IRAN TICKING FASTER THAN OBAMA'S: White House spokesman Jay Carney said Monday the Obama Administration still believes there is "time and space" for a diplomatic track to succeed in convincing Iranian leadership to stop the nuclear program. Israeli Ambassador to the US Michael Oren stressed however, that the Israeli clock "is ticking faster." He explained that the US is a big country with very large capabilities located far from the Middle East while Israel is a small country with certain capabilities located in Iran's backyard. "And Israel, not the United States, is threatened almost weekly, if not daily, with annihilation by Iranian leaders," he said. "We've now had five months of diplomacy, and attempts to get Iran to negotiate an end to its nuclear program haven't worked." (Ha'aretz)
PM: IRAN IS OUR BIGGEST HOME-FRONT PROBLEM: PM Binyamin Netanyahu said this week that all of Israel's home-front security concerns are tiny compared to the threat from Iran. He reiterated that the Islamic Republic must not be allowed to have nuclear weapons. Netanyahu also said Israel was "investing billions in home-front defense," and holding emergency drills across Israel this week to test a text message warning system against missile strikes. Israel's central bank has also drilled "big crisis" scenarios such as war with Iran, the bank's governor, Stanley Fischer said at the weekend. Israel's Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon on Sunday called on the international community to declare the diplomatic channel with Iran over its nuclear program a failure. He said the Iranians must understand they have reached the edge of the international community's patience, and that if they continue their actions all options will be on the table. Ayalon specified that "all options" do not just refer to Israeli action, but also to action by NATO, the US and other forces. Asked how much time remains for sanctions and threats to take effect, Ayalon said "several weeks." If the Iranian's choice is made starker, he said, they are capable of changing their policy, as they did in 2003 when they grew nervous over a US attack following the Iraq invasion. TALK OF MILITARY STRIKE MAKES TEHRAN NERVOUS: Iran is disturbed by threats emanating from Israel to strike its nuclear sites and takes such threats seriously, a senior Iran expert disclosed this week. The past few days have been dominated by media headlines on a possible Israeli strike, with several reports claiming an attack is imminent and could come within weeks. Iran has been busy fortifying its air defenses and moving parts of the uranium enrichment program to underground sites to make them immune to an Israeli hit. "Iran is making preparations for an attack, though they are not discussing this," according to Ephraim Kam, deputy director of Tel Aviv University's Institute for National Security Studies. "They're taking an Israeli strike into consideration, and are disturbed by it." Asked if the ongoing rhetoric regarding a potential Israeli strike could either speed up or slow down Iran's efforts to move closer to nuclear weapons, Kam said Tehran was showing no indication of freezing its program. (J.Post) Pray the Lord will cause a deep dread of Israel to fall upon Iranian leaders – one that will cause them to freeze their nuclear weapons development. Believe for miracles to occur now on Israel's behalf as they have in the near and distant past. "The fear of the Lord came over the kingdoms in that area when they heard how the Lord waged war against Israel's enemies." 2 Chron 20:29
RUSSIA CALLS NEW US SANCTIONS ON IRAN OVERT BLACKMAIL: Russia sharply criticized new US sanctions against Iran on Monday, saying the measures to penalize banks, insurance companies and shippers that help Iran sell its oil would harm Moscow's ties with Washington if Russian firms are affected. Russia, which has long opposed sanctions beyond those approved by the UN Security Council to pressure Tehran over its nuclear program, called the measures "overt blackmail." The actions approved by Congress on August 1 build on oil trade sanctions signed into law by Obama in December that have prompted Japan, South Korea, India and others to slash purchases of Iranian oil. "We consider efforts to impose internal American legislation on the entire world completely unacceptable," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement. "We reject methods of overt blackmail the United States resorts to in relation to the companies and banks of other countries. Those in Washington should consider our bilateral relations will suffer seriously if Russian operators come under the effects of the American restrictions," the ministry said. (Reuters)
ISRAEL WARNS IT COULD DESTROY PARTS OF LEBANON TO STOP ROCKETS: The increasingly public discussion over a possible attack on Iran shifted slightly on Monday to how Israel might destroy parts of Lebanon and Gaza if faced with a barrage of rockets from Hezbollah and Hamas. A leading concern is that if Israel were to attack Iran, Tehran would respond not only by sending long-range missiles toward the Jewish state, but also by directing Hezbollah and Hamas terror groups to rain tens of thousands of missiles down on the country. Vice Premier Silvan Shalom said Iran did not have an "unlimited number of missiles," and that Israel could stop massive rocket fire within 24 hours by attacking the infrastructure in Lebanon and Gaza and paralyzing daily life there. He mentioned targets such as power plants, oil refineries and airports. A senior IDF official warned Hezbollah Tuesday morning following Nasrallah boasts Monday that Hezbollah missiles can target any Israeli city. "I advise Nasrallah not to put Israel to the test. The consequences will be harsh and painful." (J.Post) "God is within her, she will not fall. God will help her at the break of day. ANCIENT SAMSON SEAL DISCOVERED: A small ancient seal depicting a man fighting a lion has been discovered near Beit Shemesh. The Tel Aviv researchers who dug up the artifact believe it to be related to the biblical story of Samson who fought wild animals and Israel's foes the Philistines. Archeologists believe the find to be from the 12th century BCE. The city of Beit Shemesh is in the region where Samson lived. (Arutz-7) A timely discovery...
NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC CALLS ISRAEL TRAIL EPIC: National Geographic has included the Israel National Trail in its list of the world's 20 most "epic trails." The list's author, Doug Schnitzspahn, calls Israel's selected path "the holy grails of trails across the world" and specifically describes the route as one that "delves into the grand scale of biblical landscapes as well as the everyday lives of modern Israelis." The Israel Trail was established in 1995 and is more than 631 miles long from the North to the South. (J.Post)
