Major Shaul Abir Shares at Beth Hallel

Major Shaul Abir will be sharing his informed insider perspective about the recent Gaza War at Beth Hallel Messianic Congregation on Tuesday, Sept. 16 beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Shaul was born in Israel in 1954 to Holocaust survivors. He did not like school because of an undiagnosed case of ADHD. Because of his ADHD, he excelled in everything outside of the classroom — especially in sports.

At the age of 18, Shaul joined the military and felt as though it was a fresh start. During the Yom Kippur War, he was a tank crew-member. After the war, he took the officer’s training course and served as a tank platoon commander and operation officer.

After receiving his bachelor’s degree in psychology with high honors from the Northeastern Illinois University, he became an organizational psychologist for the Israeli Navy where he held the rank of major as an active reservist.

As a consultant at a military school for high-risk youth, he helped create a school from scratch. His duties included consulting and working closely with the school military commander and principal, developing operational procedures and designing and applying special projects. He was also involved in training teachers and staff, leading both one-on-one and group counseling programs, solving major problems regarding the teenagers and being there for them.

For years, he has been giving lectures and conducting workshops for a variety of organizations including Israel Defense Forces, Israel Ministry of Defense, Israel Anti-Drug Authority, numerous high schools, local municipalities, rural kibbutz and moshav communities, youth boarding schools and more.

These activities deal with issues such as coping with social and peer pressure, alcohol and drug abuse, effective communication, leadership, motivation, teamwork, conflict resolution, alternatives to violent behaviors and coping with learning disabilities.
