Jerusalem and the Politics of Artifacts

Readers of The Messianic Times are no strangers to the religious and political controversy over Jerusalem and especially the hotly-disputed site of the Temple Mount. This site, above all others, has become exhibit A for Palestinian government officials in their political denial of the Jewish Temple. How, it might be asked, can such a denial have currency when tourists from all over the world can see the ancient stones of the former site of the Temple, many still in place (such as the Western Wall)? Nevertheless, facts require interpretation. Consider the words of Chief Palestinian Justice Sheik Taysir Tamimi, the second most important Palestinian cleric after Muhammad Hussein, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem. He has stated the official position of the Palestinian Authority on the matter of Jerusalem and the Jews: “Israel started since 1967 making archeological digs to show Jewish signs to prove the relationship between Judaism and the city, and they found nothing.
