Grace - specifically God's grace. What is it really? Many believers today see grace as a New Testament concept and refer to it in context as living under the grace of the New Covenant.

Others would vehemently disagree. What we do know is that the character of God does not change, and neither does His Word.

To fully understand the miracle of God's grace, one can and should look to the Old Testament as well as the New Testament. Grace was evident throughout the Old Testament.

The Hebrew word for grace is "Chen" and it means undeserved favor from someone in a high position with no obligation to give to someone in a low position.

What grace did God extend to Nineveh that so angered Jonah? Or why the inclusion of Bathsheba, the stolen wife of King David, in the lineage of Yeshua?

It was as a foreshadowing of the ultimate gift of grace found in God giving His only Son to redeem back a sinful world. It is "Chen" - a gracious gift given by Almighty God. The God of the universe responding from the overflowing abundance of His mercy and love.

The Greek word for grace is charis - a beautiful word! The apostle Paul used this word to express what He had personally experienced - God's great love gift to men while they were still sinners. Yeshua surrendering His life to once and for all time pay the sacrifice owed for the sin of the world. It means we all have received the unearned, undeserved favor of the most High God.

As we celebrate the miracle of Chanukah, we are reminded that it is a beautiful symbol of God's grace. It continues to pour over us, It is pure. Undefiled. It is sufficient to meet our need. It pushes out the darkness. It provides courage to stand in times of trouble. It is a powerful witness to the miraculous provision of Almighty God.

Let us rejoice in the grace so freely given that came at such a high price to our Messiah.

But God was rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us. Even when we were dead in our trespasses, He made us alive together with Messiah. (By grace you have been saved!) And He raised us up with Him and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Messiah Yeshua— to show in the olam ha-ba the measureless richness of His grace in kindness toward us in Messiah Yeshua. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not from yourselves—it is the gift of God.

Ephesians 2:4-8 TLV
